3 simple changes to make your packaging more recyclable
23 Jul 2024
Recyclable packaging has never been more important and with more directives, legislation and becoming intrinsic in company Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) policies there is little wonder that recyclable packaging is a topic that’s hot in companies across the UK.
In addition, customers are making it clear they prefer recyclable packaging that is easy to dispose of through business or domestic recycling methods. End users often choose products now based on the type of packaging they are in, often avoiding packs wherever possible that have hard to recycle or non-recyclable materials in them.
This has meant many businesses have, or are having, to review the packaging they procure and use. They are making more informed choices to choose sustainably and ultimately support supply chains, customers and end users with what they want. Clearly, in addition to ticking the sustainability and recycling boxes, the chosen packaging also must perform and corrugated brings myriad benefits and options often not understood.
Jennifer Riddell, Managing Director, Boxshop said; “We support many customers in removing hard or non-recyclable materials from their packaging and help them to understand the huge benefits corrugated brings in terms of design, flexibility and strength.
“From bespoke gift packaging to large format transit packaging our team can create solutions that are truly impressive and recyclable with ease.”
Here are the top three simple changes we think can be made to make packaging streams be more recyclable.
1– Use bespoke packaging solutions. This will alleviate any need for void fill and our teams can create bespoke boxes, fittings and dividers from corrugated board to give the best product protection. Correctly designed, corrugated can support a wide range of industries and sectors to achieve their sustainable packaging goals and ensure products are easy to pack, easy to store and navigate all elements of any given supply chain across road, rail, air and sea.
2– Choose paper based void fill if bespoke packaging is not an option. We recognise bespoke packaging isn’t for everyone, however by choosing the correct sized box and only using paper based void fill, a sustainable solution can still be achieved. In addition, custom made fittings and dividers can be designed and manufactured to fit standard FEFCO boxes, which we also manufacture with or without print for many customers, especially through our designated case making facility across the road from our main East Kilbride site.
3 – Choose corrugated! As a sustainable raw material made from at least 75% recycled material and is 100% recyclable it makes perfect sense to choose corrugated to meet sustainability targets for packaging procurement. Furthermore, our raw material comes from sustainable sources and is FSC certified. Offering unrivalled design capabilities, flexibility and strength the possibilities that corrugated can achieve are significant, with many customers still incredibly surprised by what we can achieve through our experienced sales, design and production teams.
Jennifer added; “Making a switch to corrugated, or to bespoke packaging solutions rather than off the shelf options is incredibly straightforward when you partner with the Boxshop team.
“Our experienced and innovative design team begin the process with you to determine your exact requirements and incorporate both constructional and graphic design. This is complemented by our wide range of production machinery and capabilities which allows us to manufacture everything from high volume, no print cases to 6 colour high quality post print (HQPP). Our warehouse and despatch team ensure goods are delivered to you when required, and for some customers we can offer additional services such as assembly work or stock and serve to support more complex supply chains.”
